This entry aims to provide a definition and a description of the linguistic field of discourse analysis. It introduces the field by mentioning several handbooks, monographs, and articles that deal with this area of research or with more specific topics and issues related to it. After an overview of the different meanings covered by the term “discourse”, the entry discusses different key notions, topics, and approaches in discourse analysis, showing the heterogeneity of approaches used in this field of research and the wide range of topics and issues that fall within its scope.
