The article shows that basic ideas of On the Genealogy of Morals are anticipated in Nietzsche’s Lecture on ancient greek cult (Der Gottesdienst der Griechen). Here Nietzsche gives up the Wagnerian, Schopenhauerian view of The Birth of Tragedy for a very different approach to ancient greek culture. The young philologist’s methodological shift is partly due to Edward Burnett Tylor’s and John Lubbock’s evolutionary anthropology, but his specific interests - the focus on a particular culture and on syncretistic, ‘multicultural’ phaenomena, the fascination of ancient feasts - lead ihm to new methodological insights and later to his groundbreaking ‘genealogical’ approach.

Abstract
The article shows that basic ideas of On the Genealogy of Morals are anticipated in Nietzsche’s Lecture on ancient greek cult (Der Gottesdienst der Griechen). Here Nietzsche gives up the Wagnerian, Schopenhauerian view of The Birth of Tragedy for a very different approach to ancient greek culture. The young philologist’s methodological shift is partly due to Edward Burnett Tylor’s and John Lubbock’s evolutionary anthropology, but his specific interests - the focus on a particular culture and on syncretistic, ‘multicultural’ phaenomena, the fascination of ancient feasts - lead ihm to new methodological insights and later to his groundbreaking ‘genealogical’ approach.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
