The paper describes the synthesis of fulleropyrrolidines contg. substituted derivs. of cardanol - a readily available renewable raw material. Cardanol is derived from cashew (Anacardium occidentale) nutshell liq. and consists of a mixt. of (alkyl)phenol and (alkenyl)phenol derivs. The cardanol derivs. used in this study included 3-(pentadecyl)phenol, 2-(1,1-dimethylethyl)-5-pentadecylphenol, and 2-(1,1-dimethylpropyl)-5-pentadecylphenol. These were elaborated into [[(pentadecyl)phenoxy]ethoxy]benzaldehyde derivs. and subject to a three component reaction with glycine derivs. and [5,6]fullerene-C60-Ih through a 1,3-dipolar cycloaddn. of in situ generated azomethine ylides.
