In all-IP wired and wireless hybrid networks, the emerging standard IEEE 802.16e could play a key role in providing mobile multimedia communication services in a Wireless Metropolitan Area Network. However, in an integrated scenario, TCP has to meet the challenges introduced by the wireless portion of the network. As known, the performance degradation of TCP in wired-wireless hybrid networks, characterized by high bit error rate and burst errors, is mainly due to its lack of ability to differentiate packet losses caused by network congestion from transmission errors associated to wireless link. In this paper, a comparison between TCP enhancements and a local data link approach has been performed. With regards to local approach, the effectiveness of several variants of the flexible Automatic Repeat reQuest mechanism proposed in the IEEE 802.16e standard has been evaluated. Simulation results show us an ARQ data link protocol can improve TCP performance more than by using a TCP enhancement. However, an accurate and/or adaptive selection of the values of some data link layer parameters would be needed in a mobility scenario.

Abstract
However, an accurate and/or adaptive selection of the values of some data link layer parameters would be needed in a mobility scenario.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
