The residual stress affect a large number of mechanical components, particularly when a welding or a thermo-mechanical process have been executed. When the applied load is superimposed to the pre-existent residual stress, the real stress state can be very far from the predicted one and, moreover, the stress state changes after the load application, especially in fatigue. This paper, in fact, focused its attention explicitly to the phenomenon of the mechanical relaxation of the residual stress field, in order to provide an experimental and quantitative evaluation of the residual stress relaxation occurring in butt-welded joints subjected to a fatigue load, which would be helpful for a definition of a more punctual and reliable methodology to correct the prediction of the fatigue life in order to consider the influence of the residual stress.
