In this article, partially based upon the text of a paper given at the 10th EAJS International Conference, Warsaw 2003, I trace briefly the development of Wang Zhaojun's story in China and Japan, in order to fix the major themes proprer to the legend, and then I examine two Japanese setsuwa version (in Kara monogatari and in Konjaku monogatari, respectively) that, compared to the Chinese legend, seem to take in some innovative and originaltraits.
