The present work presents preliminary data regarding the processing and use of metal in Salento during the Middle Ages. The research, which is part of a larger project that analyses medieval settlement and territory, began through the archaeo- metry of a sample of metallic slags found during excavation and field survey in Salento and proceeds with a typological and functional evaluation of metal objects from two deserted medieval villages, Quattro Macine (Giuggianello, LE) and Apigliano (Martano, LE), that have been excavated over the past few years.
