This paper is about Exploratory Computing, a novel approach for accessing Rich Data Sets, i.e. sets of objects that can be associated to a complex taxonomy. Exploratory Computing has its own characterization, but it can be better understood as a combination of Faceted Search (with its fast interaction for creating subsets) and Data Mining (with its ability at understanding the properties of a set). The combination is not just a “sum” but it develops also a host of new features. The paper explores concepts, models, novelties, what has been done, what can be done next and what we perceive as challenges. The main point is that this is a new exciting field for research, technical developments and applications.

Abstract
This paper is about Exploratory Computing, a novel approach for accessing Rich Data Sets, i.e. sets of objects that can be associated to a complex taxonomy. Exploratory Computing has its own characterization, but it can be better understood as a combination of Faceted Search (with its fast interaction for creating subsets) and Data Mining (with its ability at understanding the properties of a set). The combination is not just a “sum” but it develops also a host of new features. The paper explores concepts, models, novelties, what has been done, what can be done next and what we perceive as challenges. The main point is that this is a new exciting field for research, technical developments and applications.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
