What characterizes the treatment of the subject of categories in the 15th and 16th centuries is without doubt its close relationship to the theory of definition. Reflection on the role of categories, and therefore on that of definition, takes on a specific meaning if we consider that during the 15th and 16th centuries the logic based on demonstration continued to be considered the most efficient technique of scientific investigation, due to the conviction that the analysis of phenomena must be based on the demonstrative procedure.

Abstract

What characterizes the treatment of the subject of categories in the 15th and 16th centuries is without doubt its close relationship to the theory of definition. Reflection on the role of categories, and therefore on that of definition, takes on a specific meaning if we consider that during the 15th and 16th centuries the logic based on demonstration continued to be considered the most efficient technique of scientific investigation, due to the conviction that the analysis of phenomena must be based on the demonstrative procedure.
