The anodic efficiency of zinc-air batteries with alkaline electrolytes is crucially affected by the formation of passivating films. The nature of these films is still poorly understood and notably influenced by the operating parameters and by the electrochemical polarization history. In particular, the anodic behaviour is strongly hysteretic and exhibits a sharp transition from the active dissolution branch to the pseudo-passive state. The space-time distribution of anodic areas in either state impacts the battery dynamics, with specially notable effects on electrically rechargeable devices. The present study on the one hand presents original fundamental results and their physico-chemical modelling, and on the other hand opens up the perspective of optical transduction of anode activity state in view of battery control, aimed at stabilizing the active dissolution state.

Abstract
The anodic efficiency of zinc-air batteries with alkaline electrolytes is crucially affected by the formation of passivating films. The nature of these films is still poorly understood and notably influenced by the operating parameters and by the electrochemical polarization history. In particular, the anodic behaviour is strongly hysteretic and exhibits a sharp transition from the active dissolution branch to the pseudo-passive state. The space-time distribution of anodic areas in either state impacts the battery dynamics, with specially notable effects on electrically rechargeable devices. The present study on the one hand presents original fundamental results and their physico-chemical modelling, and on the other hand opens up the perspective of optical transduction of anode activity state in view of battery control, aimed at stabilizing the active dissolution state.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
