The emergence of exponential technologies such as artificial intelligence, cognitive computing, and advanced analytics, is driving the affirmation of a new breed of organizations able to lead their industries and markets thanks to radically new strategic and operational capabilities. The meaning of business processes and the way in which process management is conducted are significantly rapidly changing within such “exponential” organizations. In particular, ideas like cognitive enterprise and cognitive process management are emerging, although a clear definition and operational understanding are not yet present in literature. New contributions are thus needed to provide strategy and operations managers with guidelines aimed to drive the transformation of their organizations into cognitive enterprises. In such endeavor, this article adopts a conceptual development approach to present a definition and integrative framework of cognitive enterprise and management systems. Besides, the main concept, subsystems and enabling layers of a cognitive process management system are introduced. The main value of the article is to discuss emerging concepts in the evolving (process) management scenario and to propose an integrative definition and operational view of next-generation organizations.

Abstract
The main value of the article is to discuss emerging concepts in the evolving (process) management scenario and to propose an integrative definition and operational view of next-generation organizations.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
