The purpose of this article is to explore foreign enterprises’ innovation practices in China, in light of the effectiveness of the technology transfer channels used. Such exploration was carried out through the analysis of three case studies of Italian companies in Guangdong Province. Data were collected through direct interviews and further follow-up contacts. Analyses pointed out some factors influencing the international transfer of technology in terms of hampering or facilitating the transfer, which are, as for the first event, stringent regulations and intellectual property infringement, and local absorptive capacity in the second event. Findings revealed how laws, regulations and IPR (intellectual property rights) regime still have a significant impact on their technological and innovation activities. In these regards, some recommendations are provided in this article to improve the effectiveness of these channels and try to overcome the barriers to international technology transfer, as well as to leverage the innovation models and activities followed by foreign enterprises, with particular reference to those operating in Guangdong.
