The present paper studies the substances, especially dung, taken from the two varieties of crocodile attested in ancient medical writings, the land crocodile and the amphibian crocodile. It examines the therapeutic and cosmetic properties attributed to these substances, including the types of affections that they are supposed to heal, and compares this information to modern pharmacodynamic data. Finally, it considers the accessibility of these products and their context of production in Graeco-Roman antiquity.
