The essay, starting from the approval of the Millennium Sustainable Development Goals and after mentioning the scientific debate on their low degree of legalization, addresses the question of the anthropocentric ontology as a limitation in the concept of sustainable development that, starting from the definition in the Brundtland Report, is widely shared at international level, influencing regional and national regulation. Subsequently, it refers to the possibility that the same limitaton is present in the Italian Constitution, before and after the reform that amended Articles 9 and 41, including the protection of the environment, ecosystems and biodiversity, also in the interest of future generations, among the fundamental principles. According to the author, the personalist foundation of the Constitution, even before the reform, had allowed for an adaptation of the constitutional norms to the perspective of sustainable development, and permitted the affirmation, thanks to the fundamental role of the Constitutional Court, of a non-anthropocentric and 'ego-istic' but relational and 'eco-istic' vision of the relationship between mankind and environment.
