Here, we firstly investigate the temporal compounding (or clustering) of precipitation, over Italian territory occurring before landslide events, to understand the role of precipitation clusters in the generation of different movement types (complex, debris flow, fall, flow, and sliding). Using the ERA5 dataset of precipitation, we assess when and where a clustering of precipitation events in a fixed temporal window (assumed equal to 15 days, 30 days, and 90 days) is detected. Then, using a database of landslides, from the AVI project, we determine which landslides experienced a temporal compounding of precipitation before their occurrences. We investigated, from a meteorological point of view, the synoptic conditions more prone to temporal clustering of precipitation, distinguishing the four seasons. This may contribute to the investigation of natural hazards characterized by a filling-a-capacity behavior.
