This introductory chapter stresses the importance of the Postclassical language stage for the understanding of Greek which is one of the few languages in the world with a very long and uninterrupted written tradition. The chapter aims to be programmatic suggesting the way in which we should look at this language stage. It discusses the chronological label ‘Postclassical’ and highlights the advantages of using it. It sketches the problems addressed in this work and highlights related perspectives for the study of Greek and historical linguistics, both in general and in more detailed way, providing an outline of the volume’s papers.
