Located 5 km south of Manduria – in a dominant position controlling the Ionian coast and the surrounding areas – the ancient built-up area of Li Castelli is a privileged observatory for topographic research (in particular, aerial topographic research). Abstract

Located 5 km south of Manduria – in a dominant position controlling the Ionian coast and the surrounding areas – the ancient built-up area of Li Castelli is a privileged observatory for topographic research (in particular, aerial topographic research). In fact, this area has been abandoned after the III century B.C. and occasionally and partially reoccupied in medieval times. This is a preliminary report of investigations initiated in recent times with the aim of expanding knowledge regarding the ancient built-up area, which has been very little studied, so far. The information drawn from the identification and interpretation of the traces and anomalies found on the aerial and remote sensing images – managed and processed in the GIS environment – are combined with the data from the field research, and gathered with careful review of the investigations carried out in the past, in order to reconstruct an overview and to provide a new and more comprehensive understanding of the topographical organization of the ancient built-up area.
