In its first part, the paper emphasises the difference between ἐλευθερία and free will; this difference, already known on a conceptual level, is transferred by Clement, for the first time, also on a lexical level. In the second and third parts, then, after a brief review of some significant Clementine definitions of free will, the analysis of the still little-considered section of Strom. 5, 12–14 highlights the constant tension, identified by Clement in human existence, between freedom, grace, free will and gift.
