Abstract

It is with the entry into the labour market and the political sphere that the “gender revolution” has found its driving force. However, despite the achievements reached, the change is slow and non-linear. The reasons behind gender inequalities at work and in political representation are manifold, interconnected, and multi-level. The purpose of this contribution is to convey this complexity based on an interpretive framework that emphasizes contextual factors, as well as the influence these latter have on individual determinants. By distinguishing between micro, meso, and macro reasons, this article aims to systematize the debate by adopting a theoretical perspective that is not only sociological but also «gendered» and, therefore, critical.
