Abstract

Mummies are the preserved or partially-preserved remains of human beings. When studying mummies, researchers must understand the many ethical issues that arise from working with ancient and historic human remains. One common debate is the use of autopsy versus minimally-invasive methods of analysis for the study of mummies. This chapter considers several ethical issues associated with the study of human mummies and, in particular, discusses two case studies to illustrate the particular issues associated with these two approaches in this field of research.
