This chapter examines the cultural impact and sustainable conservation practices of the Museo della Memoria e dell’Accoglienza in Santa Maria al Bagno (Nardò, Italy), a museum dedicated to preserving the memory of Jewish refugees who found shelter in southern Italy between 1943 and 1947. Framed within contemporary debates on cultural sustainability, heritage governance, and the role of memory institutions in sustainable development, the study investigates how museums can function not only as repositories of historical testimonies but also as active agents in the production of social meaning, community cohesion, and territorial development. Drawing on a multidimensional methodology that combines fieldwork, stakeholder interviews, focus groups, documentary analysis, and internationally recognized cultural sustainability frameworks, the chapter explores the museum’s contribution to the preservation of both tangible and intangible heritage. Particular attention is devoted to the relationship between the museum and its social, cultural, and environmental context, highlighting its role in mediating dissonant heritage, fostering intercultural dialogue, and strengthening collective memory. The analysis integrates European and international policy frameworks on cultural sustainability, including UNESCO Culture|2030 Indicators, the Faro Convention, and the Sustainable Development Goals, to propose a set of indicators for assessing cultural impact and social sustainability. The chapter argues that the long-term conservation of heritage depends not only on technical preservation measures but also on community participation, inclusive governance, and the capacity of heritage institutions to generate meaningful connections between past experiences and contemporary social challenges. Through the case of the Museo della Memoria e dell’Accoglienza, the study demonstrates how memory-based heritage initiatives can contribute to sustainable development, social resilience, and the construction of inclusive cultural narratives.
