This issue of "Theoretical and Mathematical Physics" is based on talks presented at the conference “Solitons in 1+1 and 2+1 dimensions: KP, DS, and all that.” held in Lecce at the Universita' del Salento, 13-14 September 2011. The conference was dedicated to the 70th birthdays of professors Marco Boiti and Flora Pempinelli. In our opinion, in view of the quality of the contributions, this publication gives a good up-to-date picture of the state of the art in the field of the theory of nonlinear integrable equations and its applications, and outlines the most recent and relevant results in a way that should stimulate the interested reader.
